Innovating Applicant Sifting
In 2016, the Secretary of State for Justice announced investment to provide 2,500 more frontline prison staff by 2018, the task might have seemed insurmountable. Shared Services Connected Ltd (SSCL) – a joint venture between the Cabinet Office and Sopra Steria, acting as the staffing provider to the Prison Service – supported the goal from its inception by running recruitment on a shared service basis.
The team faced two key issues, a lengthy, complicated process which lost candidates and applicants that were unprepared for the realities of working in a prison. SSCL improved applicant engagement and introduced a new pre-employment checking system which sped up the process by 53 per cent.
The overall result was a dynamic and streamlined recruitment process and in February 2018 the Ministry of Justice reported it was on target to recruit its extra 2,500 prison officers nine months ahead of the scheduled December 2018 end date.
Sweetmans and Partners
Hackathon for the Financial, Legal and Professional Services Sector
In July 2018, Sweetmans and Partners piloted a “hackathon” for the Financial, Legal and Professional Services (FLPS) sector to support the following strategic priorities:
• develop current and future leaders’ non‐technical skills
• grow professional networks
• foster collaboration across the sector
The premise of a Hackathon is that: working with people from different backgrounds, with complimentary skills in a time‐pressured environment on a shared goal creates fresh ideas and a rich learning environment. We developed this concept in partnership with 7 leading FLPS firms and teams were supported, on the day, with:
• The development process – ideation, understanding marketplace and action planning
• Key skills development – critical thinking, creativity and collaboration
• Communication – facilitators and an online platform enabled teams to develop their “pitch” for the judges
The challenge we set participants had both business and social benefits, reflecting the growing perception that business has a purpose beyond profit.
