Making Our Workforce More Diverse
“The Welsh Government’s Strategic Equality Plan objectives for 2016 – 2020 set the organisational aim to be an exemplar of diversity and inclusion. We want our workforce to be representative of Welsh communities, by increasing the number of people we recruit who are Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and widening our socio-economic profile. Tackling inequality is a business critical goal, not just an ethical imperative.
We sought to make changes through our outreach programme, targeting disadvantaged communities, raising aspirations, showcasing what our organisation does, highlighting the public service ethos and providing a real opportunity for new entrants to begin their career with us.
The Welsh Government 2017 Apprentices scheme closed with nearly 600 people applying. As a result of an innovative outreach and engagement programme we had:
• 13.6% declared as being from a BAME background
• 7% declared a disability
• Only 4.7% failed to declare any religious / non religious category”
